Due to unexpected staff absences, Ethos CEO Valerie Frias and Nachet Mechiz, the organization’s nutrition director, pitched in to sanitize tables and serve meals to homeless older adults at Cardinal Medeiros Center in the city’s South End neighborhood.

The site hosts one of Ethos’ 44 Community Cafés and normally serves up to 75 older homeless individuals. Due to state orders limiting public gatherings, that number of people was limited to 25 at a time. As a precaution to help prevent the spread of coronavirus (covid-19) among older adults, many of the venues that host our cafes have decided to close their facilities or, cancel or curtail activities. Others have been requested closed to by order of the state.

While most community cafes are open from 10:00 am-1:00 pm, meals are generally available for pick up from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the meantime, we wanted to let you know that some older adults may qualify to receive home delivered meals. If you, or someone you know, is 60 or older, and is interested in receiving meals on wheels, please call 617-477-6606 or visit www.ethocare.org.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Ethos is experiencing increased demand for Meals on Wheels and Community Cafe programs. More and more older adults are heeding public health warnings and remaining in their homes as much as possible. The hot, nutritious meals that Ethos provides has become a critical lifeline for so many in our community. While we expect legislation to increase funding for this program, we have an immediate need for unrestricted funds to bridge the gap.
