The Personal Care Attendant program (PCA) is available to people of any age who have MassHealth Standard or CommonHealth and need assistance with at least two activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, taking medications, eating, transferring or moving inside of the home. An Ethos nurse and occupational therapist will evaluate the consumer for the amount of time that they need for these activities, as well as other tasks that are needed to remain independently at home such as assistance to medical appointments, grocery shopping and homemaking.

Final approval of the amount of time is done by nurses working for UMASS- Commonwealth Medicine. The PCA program sets up the individual as an employer and helps the individual learn how to hire, train and supervise their workers. Ethos works with Mass CP as the fiscal intermediary so that checks can be processed for PCAs and taxes can be paid. PCAs are employees of the individual and MassHealth will pay the wages and statutory benefits such as worker’s compensation.
